Rolph Payet
Joint winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize
Rolph Payet, a Seychelles citizen, is Special Advisor to the President of the Republic of Seychelles.
As an international policy expert and researcher on environment and island issues, Rolph is currently Special Advisor to the President of the Republic of Seychelles on numerous environmental matters including sustainable development, biodiversity, climate change, energy, and international environment policy.
Rolph is founding member/trustee of the Global Island Partnership, the Sea Level Rise Foundation, the Seychelles University Foundation, the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology, the Island Conservation Society and the Silhouette Foundation.
Rolph has been instrumental in increasing the visibility and impact of numerous regional and international organisations such as the International Coral Reef Initiative (co-chair from 2003-2005) and the Nairobi Convention Regional Seas Programme (coordinator 1998-now)
Recently, Rolph has been invited to sit on numerous international conference committees and panels, and as moderator/speaker on climate change, biodiversity and island issues. Recently invited by H.E. Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the UN, he acted as lead discussant on a panel on the Millennium Development Goals at the UN General Assembly. His work has also been covered by the international media, such as CNN and the BBC.
Rolph has received numerous international awards and recognition for his work on islands, climate change and biodiversity. In November 2007, he shared in the IPCC Nobel Peace Prize as an IPCC Lead Author. In January 2007, he was selected a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
Rolph has published widely on a number of island issues and was lead researcher for several projects in marine and climate change research.
In 2001 he established the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research, the first ever institution exclusively dedicated to research in Seychelles. In June 2007 he was appointed chairman of the Seychelles University Foundation by President James Michel of the Seychelles, to establish the first University in Seychelles.
